Review: Music Together: 9.75 out of 10!!!!!

We recently had the opportunity to review Music Together.

The website’s description of the program is as follows:

“Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, first and second graders, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.”

Music Together holds classes across the United States and I wish they had them in our area here in Canada. You can see if they have them in your area here. They also have an online store where they sell their programs and also musical instruments such as shakers and tambourines.

The program we received was the Music Together “Family Favorites” CDs and the companion “FamilyFavorites Songbook for Teachers”.

The CD includes 19 of the Music Together songs. You can hear samples of all the songs on the “FamilyFavorites” CD page.  The CD by itself is $14.95, or you can download individual tracks for $.99 each or the entire album for $9.99.

The Songbook for Teachers has 112 pages of music and lots of teaching suggestions for each of the songs on the Family Favorites CD. It sells for $29.95. There are so many ideas contained in this that I would highly recommend this as well as the cd if budget allows.

The MusicTogether Family Favorites CD and Songbook Combo is available for a special price of $39.95 (a $5 discount). If you use the coupon code “Schoolhouse” at checkout on the Music Together online store, you can save an additional $2 on your purchase.

We used this in a couple of different ways: In the car, using found objects and body parts to beat out rhythms; and as a group, using both instruments we already own, and also different sized containers like cans and paper towel rolls filled with things such as rice and beans, and taped shut, and our dress-up scarves. Any visiting guests (aged 2-40+; we entertain regularly, and it’s often in an impromptu manner) joined in and on a couple of occasions it became the entire afternoon’s entertainment!

A few of our favourites from the songbook: A conga line, adding in our own verses, dancing with scarves, shaking out different beats…..we had a blast with this, so much so that I plan to take it to the daycares I substitute at and try it out there as well. We dance around the house to music all the time as it is, but this cd added a whole new dimension as we shook and shimmied our way through household chores, beat rythym with bath toys, and just generally enjoyed ourselves.

If you are looking for something fun to add to your day, for a great Christmas or birthday gift, or you work at a daycare as I do and want to liven it up, my entire family and assorted guests can not recommend this highly enough. It rated an average 9.75 out of 10 stars, even with the adults who were roped in when they thought they were just here for dinner with their kids.
