eIditarod 2013

I recently learned about the eIditarod and wanted to share the information in case anyone else might find it interesting.

Imagine learning more about this annual dogsled race with your kids, picking a musher to cheer on, and tracking them through the different legs of the race. What a great way to learn geography, science, challenges of the Arctic climate, and so much more! And the fact that this is completely free, and already laid out for us, is just the icing on the cake.

Here's how it works: Go read more about it here, then you sign up for the yahoo group. Once you're approved, you receive emails with every file you need about the mushers competing, the race, and even including how to make the map. Simple, right? And so much fun!

Here's the timeline for this year:

January 13-January 27, 2013               Open Registration period

January 28 - February 8, 2013             Create a wall map of the trail

February 11 - February 22, 2013         Select a musher to follow in the race

February 25 - March 1, 2013               Prepare for the big event

March 2, 2013 - end of the race           Follow your musher and post to each checkpoint's blog as
                                                            he or she progresses!

March 31, 2013                                   Receive an official eIditarod certificate for completion of the trail!

This will be a great complement to our study of the polar regions!
